Play with perspective and composition

Make sure you’re not wearing your new or nice clothes, because when taking a good photo of your pet, there’s a good chance you’ll be lying on the floor or kneeling. The most common approach in pet photography is to take photos at the eye level of the animal. At this height, you can follow the movements of the pet. However, don’t stick to just one perspective. A good tip is to use the space and play with different viewpoints. Alternate between photos at eye level, from a bird’s-eye view (higher than your pet), and from a worm’s-eye view (lower than your pet), and you’ll soon notice that this creates very different photos!

Also vary the composition and try looking at your pet differently. For example, zoom in on details (like an eye, part of the fur, the nose, or a paw) or add an extra element. Sometimes a photo from the most unexpected angle is the one you’re most satisfied with. Creativity is the magic word!

Pay attention to the background

When taking photos, don’t forget to look at the surroundings. Are you and your pet not very familiar with photography yet? Then choose to start in a setting where your pet feels comfortable or let them get used to it first before posing. A new environment can be exciting for an animal.

Make sure you take photos in a place with a calm background so the focus stays on the animal. After all, the goal is for your handsome four-legged friend to jump off the screen! If you’re photographing indoors, make sure there’s no clutter. A busy and messy background can be too distracting.

Use natural light

Try to use as much natural light as possible when photographing, preferably daylight. Want to take beautiful photos outdoors? Make sure it’s not too cloudy (as the photo will be too dark), but also avoid direct sunlight. This causes harsh light and distracting shadows. Your pet’s eyes often become hard to see, and there’s a risk the fur will be overexposed. Want photos in a cozy indoor setting? Make sure all curtains are fully open and choose a calm room with plenty of light. This will make the light fall beautifully on your pet.

Avoid using a flash. Besides distracting the animal, a flash often causes reflections on the fur or in the eyes. It also often results in an overexposed photo. And of course, that’s not what you want!

Don’t be stingy when it comes to photographing

The more photos you take, the greater the chance of getting the perfect shot. So don’t hold back when photographing and take lots of pictures; you can always delete any that are unsuccessful or not to your liking.

Patience is a virtue

The most important thing in pet photography is patience. Animals are animals: there’s no guarantee they will always do exactly what you ask. When you want to photograph your loyal four-legged friend, take your time and stay calm. Your (un)rest also affects your pet. Try to avoid getting frustrated if your dog or cat won’t stay still, and instead do something else, like going for a walk or playing with them. Forcing it is not a good idea, so continue later if you or your pet are really not having a good day.
