Overstappen op ander hondenvoer, hoe doe je dat?

Switching to a different dog food, how do you do that?

It can sometimes happen that you want to switch to different food for your little four-legged friend. Maybe your dog no longer reacts well to the food he or she is currently receiving. There are various ways to switch to different food. How exactly you should do this depends on the food you are currently giving and the food you want to start giving. We are here to help!

Step-by-step plan for switching to different dog food

  • Switching from crunchy dog kibble to another crunchy dog kibble
When you want to switch from one crunchy kibble to another crunchy kibble, it is best to do this gradually. This reduces the chance of complaints. You can switch your dog to another kibble within 7 days. Does your dog have a sensitive digestive system? Then you can take a bit longer. Take three days per step instead of two. We share a helpful step-by-step plan to switch to new food:

  • Switching from a pressed kibble to a crunchy kibble (or vice versa)
When you want to switch your pet from a pressed kibble to a crunchy kibble (or vice versa), it is best to do this all at once. Pressed kibbles are digested differently than crunchy kibbles. Mixing the kibbles can result in stomach and intestinal problems.

Do you have a sensitive dog? Then you can also choose to switch by means of steamed wet food (for example with Riverwood Mono-Proteine wet food). When you first give steamed wet food, the gut flora can recover, making the switch to another kibble easier. You can switch using wet food in the following ways:

    • Give your four-legged friend steamed wet food for one week. You can switch directly from kibble to steamed wet food. After about 7 days of steamed wet food, you can switch directly to the other kibbles.
    • Do you have a dog with an extremely sensitive digestive system? Then give steamed wet food for one week and then mix the steamed wet food with the other kibbles for about 7 days. During this week, you fully switch to the new kibbles.
  • From fresh meat to a crunchy kibble
In this case, you may also switch all at once. Because both types of food are digested differently, it is not possible to mix the food for a few days first.

Here too, you can choose to switch with a sensitive dog by means of wet food (for example with Riverwood Mono-Proteïne wet food). When you first give steamed wet food, the gut flora can recover, making the switch easier. You can switch using wet food in the following ways:

    • Give your four-legged friend steamed wet food for one week. You can switch directly from fresh meat to steamed wet food. After about 7 days of steamed wet food, you can switch directly to the kibbles.
    • Do you have a dog with an extremely sensitive digestive system? Then give steamed wet food for one week and then mix the steamed wet food with the crunchy kibbles for about 7 days. During this week, you fully switch to the new kibbles.

Diarrhea after switching to new dog food

In a dog's intestines, good and bad bacteria are present in the right balance; these bacteria together are called the gut flora. A dog's gut flora is adapted to the food the animal is currently eating. When you want to switch your dog to a different food, the gut flora will change and the digestive system needs to 'get used' to the new food. This can cause your four-legged friend to have temporarily softer stools or even diarrhea. After about 6 to 8 weeks, the body is fully 'accustomed' to the new food and symptoms like soft stools or diarrhea will have disappeared. At this point, the gut flora is fully adapted to the new food and can be optimally digested by the body.

It is also important to know what a dog can and cannot eat. We have previously written an article about this. It explains what vegetables and fruits your four-legged friend is allowed to eat. See here the article.
