Can dogs suffer from hay fever?

Spring has arrived again! The perfect time to head out together with your four-legged friend. At the same time, spring is a period when flowers, plants, and trees are in full bloom. What is meant by hay fever?

Hay fever symptoms can occur due to the pollen released by trees, plants, and flowers. It is important to know that hay fever is an atopic condition, also known as an environmental allergy. It can affect both people and dogs. Your dog can develop an allergic reaction not only to pollen and grasses due to atopy, but also to mites and dander.

Is atopy hereditary?

Although your dog can develop environmental allergies later in life, atopy is often hereditary. In 75% of cases, dogs already suffer from environmental allergies at a young age.

How does hay fever develop in dogs?

Hay fever is largely caused by inhaling pollen, but skin contact with pollen can also cause an allergic reaction. So pay close attention to where you allow your dog to roam freely.

When can a pollen allergy occur?

From February through September, there is a high chance that hay fever symptoms will appear. Since most vegetation grows in May and June, your dog may suffer more from hay fever during this period.

There is also a lot of pollen in the air on warm or windy days. This can once again cause unpleasant symptoms.

What hay fever symptoms can your dog experience?

Dogs with hay fever often suffer from skin problems. You may see them biting, scratching, or licking themselves to relieve the itching. This can then cause bald patches, scabs, thickening, and discoloration of the skin.
