Iedere dag hetzelfde eten voor een hond: vinden ze dat niet saai?

Eating the same food every day for a dog: don’t they find that boring?

Most people love delicious food. But no matter how tasty a dish is, you probably wouldn't be happy if the same food was on the menu every day. What about our loyal four-legged friends? Don't they get bored with their food if they are served the same meal every day? In this blog, we give you the answer to this question.

Is it bad for a dog to eat the same food every day?

The answer to this question is quite simple: no, it's not harmful. You can confidently feed your dog the same food every day. While humans have about 9,000 taste receptors, dogs have only around 1,700. Although humans and dogs can taste mostly the same things, dogs' taste is much less pronounced due to the smaller number of taste receptors. Therefore, they don't have the need to eat something different every day.

However, it is important that a dog receives a complete diet of good quality so that it gets all the daily recommended amounts of nutrients. But how do you know if you are giving your dog good quality dog food? In this blog, we give you 5 tips on what good dog food should meet.

Variety in dog food

Just because dogs don't need to eat something different every day doesn't mean they can't appreciate variety. Varying their diet can even provide health benefits and prevent flavor fatigue in picky dogs. It is important, however, that the dog has no food allergies or intolerances. You can introduce variety in your dog's daily menu in different ways, for example by alternating different types of meat (animal protein sources). Different animal protein sources have different amino acid and fatty acid profiles, as well as different minerals and vitamins. You can also choose to combine dry food with wet food.

At Riverwood, for the reasons above, we have deliberately chosen to use three different types of animal protein sources in our dry foods. Because more and more dogs have food allergies or intolerances, we have selected unique, hypoallergenic animal protein sources in our foods. These are protein sources to which only a small percentage of dogs (2%) are allergic.

It is advisable to stick to one brand of food if you want to add some variety to your dog's daily menu. Switching abruptly to another dog food can result in unpleasant stomach and intestinal issues such as diarrhea and other digestive problems. If you are not satisfied with the current brand of dog food and want to switch to another, this blog explains the best way to transition to different dog food.

Switching between Riverwood variants

Because Riverwood dry foods contain three different animal protein sources, it is basically not necessary to switch between different variants. Does your dog get a certain variant of Riverwood dry food but you would like to try another variant? That is possible, but then switch gradually from one variant to the other. Switching between animal protein sources for variety in your dog's daily menu is fine, but not every dog reacts well to too much switching. Since Riverwood dry foods already contain three different animal protein sources, it is important to transition gradually to the other variant to prevent digestive problems.

Also, keep a close eye on how your dog reacts to the switch to another variant.

Varying dog food is possible, but not necessary

Do dogs find eating the same food every day boring? No, definitely not! Complete dog foods of good quality contain all the daily recommended amounts of nutrients a dog needs. So varying is allowed, but certainly not necessary. Especially not if your dog gets Riverwood dry food, because it already contains three different types of animal protein sources and thus provides enough variety in your dog's daily menu.

Many dogs already enjoy Riverwood every day. Do you want your dog to also enjoy our delicious foods and are you curious which variant would suit your dog best? Then answer a few questions here and order a discounted trial pack right away.
