Applying a bandage to dogs

What do you need?

  • Cotton roll
  • Plaster
  • Betadine
  • Sterile gauze pads
  • Petflex
  • Vetramil

Step-by-step plan

  • Rinse the wound clean
  • Disinfect the wound by dabbing
  • Take a gauze pad and spread some Vetramil on it
  • Loosely wrap the Petflex around the padding and secure the band so the pressure is even.
  • If needed, use a fixation plaster to prevent the bandage from slipping.

Tips

  1. Make sure the wound is first covered with a sterile gauze pad.
  2. Don’t be too sparing with cotton. It’s important to have a good base layer for proper pressure distribution.
  3. Ensure the pressure is even.
  4. The bandage should overlap the previous layer slightly with each new wrap.
  5. Change the bandage regularly and check that the wound is not becoming infected.
  6. Be careful with medications under the bandage. If it gets too warm, the healing process can be delayed, increasing the risk of wound infection.

For a deep wound or if in doubt, always visit the veterinarian!
