Excessive sex drive in dogs
Excessive sex drive is common in adolescent male dogs. This problem occurs when female dogs are in heat. It can cause many problems and lead to embarrassing situations. Male dogs that display hypersexual behavior are almost always restless and irritable, mark many places, may run away, do not listen, and “mount” almost anything they encounter. Some male dogs even stop eating when a female dog in heat is nearby or when they smell one.
Excitement can also often cause persistent inflammation of the foreskin, accompanied by a purulent discharge. See your veterinarian to have the inflammation treated.
In older dogs, excess testosterone can result in an enlarged prostate. This can be recognized by drops of blood coming from the penis, excessive straining during bowel movements, and difficulty urinating. Always contact your veterinarian if your dog suffers from these symptoms.
How can I prevent or limit my male dog’s sex drive?
In most cases, castration is sufficient to limit a male dog’s sex drive. You can choose chemical castration, which lasts 3 to 6 months, or surgical castration, which is permanent.
In some cases, castration is not an option, for example when a dog has certain behavioral traits such as fear-related aggression. In that case, you can choose to avoid stimulating situations for your dog. You can also give your male dog a homeopathic remedy for excessive sex drive. Such a homeopathic remedy contains various substances that reduce hypersexuality and prostate bleeding. Also make sure your dog gets enough exercise and/or attend a behavior course or training.
