Healthy nutrition is very important for every dog, but for puppies, healthy nutrition plays a crucial role in their development and growth. Healthy puppy food lays the foundation for optimal growth and development of your new little friend! If you give your puppy high-quality food, this nutrition provides a good basis for your pup to grow into a healthy adult dog.
Your puppy needs balanced amounts of a wide range of nutrients, such as vitamins A and C, calcium, and phosphorus. The amounts of proteins and fats must also match the nutritional needs of a growing pup. Proteins are necessary for building muscles, skin and coat, and other body tissues. A pup should not receive too much, but certainly not too little protein and fat. Therefore, always choose food specially developed for puppies; this food contains balanced amounts of various nutrients tailored to the nutritional needs of a growing pup.
Healthy nutrition also contributes to the proper development of the immune system and strong bones, among other things. If you provide lower-quality food, or give your puppy too little or too much food, this can have adverse effects on your pup when it becomes an adult. To prevent this, it is important to give your pup healthy puppy kibble.
At Riverwood, we believe that dogs are true carnivores who are not built to digest large amounts of grains well. Additionally, grains can cause food intolerances or allergies. For these reasons, Riverwood is deliberately kept grain-free, because we believe healthy dog food is low in grains or completely grain-free. Of course, Riverwood’s puppy food is also grain-free to best meet the nutritional needs of the animal.
Riverwood offers two types of food suitable for puppies: Riverwood Puppy and Riverwood Junior Large Breed. Riverwood Puppy is specially developed for puppies of small and medium breeds (with an adult weight of ≤25 kg). Riverwood Junior Large Breed is developed for puppies of large breeds (with an adult weight of >25 kg or more). In the first 3 months of their life, every puppy receives Riverwood Puppy food. After these 3 months, large breed pups may switch to Riverwood Junior Large Breed. This food can be given up to an age of 30 months. But what makes Riverwood so suitable for puppies?
Smaller breeds need more energy because a smaller dog uses more energy than a large dog of the same age. They are also less prone to bone and joint problems. Every food contains glucosamine and chondroitin to support the joints. Additionally, MOS and FOS are present, which act as prebiotics to support digestion.
In Riverwood Junior Large Breed, the protein and fat percentages are lower than in the Riverwood Puppy variant. The Junior Large Breed variant therefore contains less energy, which is necessary for slow and steady growth, as too rapid growth can lead to bone and joint disorders. So do not give your large puppy overly energy-rich food. Depending on the adult weight, you may give Riverwood Junior Large Breed up to an age of 30 months; this is because large breed puppies grow longer than their smaller counterparts.
For large breed dogs, energy and calcium levels are crucial in preventing problems such as growing pains. Overfeeding is a major cause of growing pains, especially for growing dogs of large breeds. Excessive energy intake stimulates rapid growth, and calcium and phosphorus have a significant impact on bone development.
