My dog has dandruff.
Dandruff can be recognized by the presence of dry or oily flakes on the dog's skin. The cause is usually a disruption in the production of skin oils or a deficiency of essential fatty acids in the diet. Skin flakes are not always dandruff; they can also result from mange, a yeast or fungal infection, or hormonal imbalance. Before treating dandruff, make sure it is not one of these other causes.
Causes of dandruff in dogs
- Diet lacking omega 3 and 6, proteins, or vitamin A to support the skin
- Environmental factors such as shedding or temperature changes
- Infections from lice or mites.
Symptoms of dandruff in dogs
Dandruff often occurs in puppies with medium to long coats. If your dog has dandruff, he will frequently scratch or bite himself. There are also white flakes in the coat and/or in his bed. Depending on the severity of the dandruff and its cause, crusts, hair loss, and irregular bald spots may also be visible on the dog.
Treatment of dandruff in dogs
There are several ways to help your dog get rid of dandruff, such as:
- Feeding food with nutrients that are good for skin and coat.
- Using special dog shampoo.
- Keeping the environment at a comfortable temperature.
- Consulting the veterinarian about a specific diet.
- Ensuring your dog gets enough water.
