My dog has a dry nose
Healthy dogs usually have moist, cool, and smooth noses. A dry nose does not necessarily mean that the dog is unhealthy. The nose leather is a thick layer of skin with glands that help keep the nose moist. Excess tears, which are drained through the tear ducts, also help keep the nose moist. In some cases, the nose may be drier than usual, just like the skin. This may be caused by heating or spending a day in bright sunlight. There is no need to worry at this point. However, if cracks or scabs develop around the nose because the nose leather is too dry, there may be an underlying problem. A dry nose can be a symptom of an illness, skin condition, or reduced production or drainage of tears. If your dog has a dry nose for an extended period, it is advisable to visit the veterinarian.
Treating your dog's dry nose
You can keep a dry nose with scabs or cracks supple with a moisturizing and protective skincare product. Because dogs have a much better sense of smell than humans, it is more pleasant for your dog if you choose a product without a strong scent. Make sure it absorbs quickly and is safe if your dog licks it off. Suitable products include petroleum jelly, udder ointment, and calendula/almond oil.
My dog has a wound on its nose
Dogs like to stick their noses everywhere, so they can quickly get a small wound or cut on their nose. If the wound is large or deep, it is advisable to visit the veterinarian as soon as possible so that it can potentially be stitched. Superficial wounds often heal quite quickly. To support healing, you can keep the wound clean twice a day with a disinfectant product. There are also many products with both disinfecting and caring properties, such as honey ointment, udder ointment, and Acederm. Petroleum jelly can also soothe the skin, but it does not disinfect. Sprays should not be used, as they may get into the nose.
Cleaning your dog's dirty nose
If your dog's nose is dirty, you can use skin cleansing wipes to clean it easily. If pus or blood comes from the nostrils due to excessive nasal discharge, or if scabs develop because of inflammation of the nose leather, it is advisable to visit the veterinarian. Excessive or unusual nasal discharge can be caused by something lodged in the nose, such as grass; a fungal or bacterial infection; a growth in the nasal cavity; dental problems; a cold; or an allergy.
My dog has sunburn
Dogs with white coats and/or little pigmentation are very sensitive to sunburn, especially on areas with little hair, such as the bridge of the nose and the tips of the ears. A dark bridge of the nose can still burn and peel in the sun. Sunburn is a painful condition that may also potentially lead to skin cancer. Therefore, make sure your dog does not spend too long in the sun. If your dog is particularly sensitive to sunlight, it is advisable to protect it properly with sunscreen. Special sunscreens and sprays for animals are available.
