Caring for the dog's nose
My dog has a dry nose
Healthy dogs usually have moist, cool, and smooth noses. A dry nose does not immediately mean the dog is unhealthy. The nose leather is a thick layer of skin with glands that keep the nose moist. Excess tear fluid, which is drained through the tear duct, also helps keep the nose moist. In some cases, the nose can be drier than usual, just like the skin. This can be caused by heating or a day in the bright sun. There is nothing to worry about now. If cracks or crusts develop on the nose because the nose leather is too dry, then something is probably wrong. A dry nose can be a symptom of illness, skin condition, or reduced production or drainage of tears. If your dog has a dry nose for an extended period, it is recommended to visit the vet.
Treating a dry nose in your dog
You can keep a dry nose with crusts or cracks supple with a moisturizing and protective skin care product. Because dogs’ sense of smell is much better than humans’, it is more comfortable for the dog if you choose a product without a strong scent. Make sure it absorbs quickly and is safe if the dog licks it off. Suitable products include petroleum jelly, udder ointment, and calendula/almond oil.
My dog has a wound on his nose
Dogs like to stick their noses everywhere, so they often get a small wound or cut on their nose. If the wound is large or deep, it is recommended to visit the vet as soon as possible so it can possibly be stitched. Superficial wounds often heal quite quickly. To support healing, you can clean the wound twice a day with a disinfecting product. There are many products with both disinfecting and caring properties, such as honey ointment, udder ointment, and acederm. Petroleum jelly can also soften the skin but does not disinfect. Sprays should not be used as they can get into the nose.
Cleaning your dog’s dirty nose
If your dog’s nose is dirty, you can use cleansing wipes for the skin to easily clean it. If pus or blood comes from the nostrils due to excessive nasal discharge or crusts form on the nose leather from an infection, it is recommended to see the vet. Excessive or abnormal nasal discharge can be caused by something stuck in the nose (for example, grass), fungal or bacterial infection, a tumor in the nasal cavity, dental problems, a cold, or allergies.
My dog is sunburned
Dogs with white fur and/or little pigmentation are very sensitive to sunburn, especially on thinly haired areas such as the bridge of the nose and ear tips. A dark nose bridge can still get sunburned and peel in the sun. Sunburn is a painful condition that can potentially lead to skin cancer. Therefore, make sure your dog is not in the sun for too long. If your dog is very sensitive to the sun, it is recommended to protect him well with sunscreen. There are special sunscreens and sprays made for animals.
