How do you recognize a healthy weight in dogs?

A dog is more likely to be overweight than underweight due to nutrition and many cookies. Wanneer does a dog  have overweight or underweight?

There are several lists of which dog breeds are most common and what their associated weight is. These are the average weights that are not the same for every dog. They're guidelines you can look at, but that's all it is. To know how good your dog's condition is, you need to critically review and feel it; here you look at the amount of fat on the ribs, the belly size, muscle mass and whether there are bone protrusions to be seen.

Healthy weight in dogs

If your dog's ribs can be felt well under a not too thick layer of fat, this means that he is in good condition. The ribs are now not visible, as are the lumbar vertebrae and pelvic bones. In addition, it has a high visible waist and a rising belly line.

Overweight in dogs

Suppose you can feel the ribs with difficulty or no more and the dog looks 'well filled' this means that he suffers from obesity. Fat pads are created at the neck, the loins, tail base and waist are (almost) not visible. Also, the abdominal line is no longer ascending but more descending. Dogs are heavily overweight if they have a convex droopy belly that is wider than the breast.

Underweight in dogs

In dogs with underweight, the ribs are visible and there is no longer a fat layer. The lumbar vertebrae and pelvic bones become visible. The waist is also clearly present and the abdominal line is sharply ascending. All the by protrusions can already be seen from a distance and muscle mass
