The benefits of hypoallergenic cat food

Some cats suffer from a food allergy or food intolerance. Even though it is less common than in other pets, it is still a troublesome problem. For these cats, there is only one solution and that is hypoallergenic cat food. However, many people have no idea what exactly this is. In this blog we will tell you what hypoallergenic cat food is and what the benefits are.

What is hypoallergenic cat food?

We start off right, because hypoallergenic food does not have one set definition. To make it easy, there are no less than 3 meanings.

  1. Hypoallergenic can mean that the cat food is formulated with unique protein sources. That is, protein sources that are rarely used in cat food or to which only a small percentage of cats (2%) are allergic.
  2. Hypoallergenic can also mean that the food is formulated with 1 animal protein source. This makes it much less likely to cause an allergic reaction.
  3. Finally, hypoallergenic cat food can mean that it is formulated with hydrolyzed proteins. Another difficult term! Hydrolyzed proteins are "cut" into small pieces to the point that the body can no longer recognize them. This makes it unlikely that a cat could have an allergic reaction to it.

Our definition

Hypoallergenic foods are formulated to significantly reduce the chance of an allergic reaction. This means that the food is low in allergens, significantly reducing the chance of an adverse reaction.

The advantage of a hypoallergenic food is that the chance of an adverse reaction to the food is significantly reduced. This is because the food is formulated with as few allergens as possible. If your cat has a food allergy, the following problems, among others, may occur:

❌ Hair loss

❌ Itching

❌ Skin rashes

At Riverwood, there are three hypoallergenic varieties of cat food (Outdoor, Derma & Sterilised). These varieties are formulated with 3 different, unique sources of protein. In addition, the food is completely grain and gluten free.

We often recommend the Derma variety for cats with food allergies; provided the cat is not allergic to salmon, whitefish or herring.
